Hace mucho que no escribo nada sobre nuestro pequeño huerto urbano, así que ahí va un post. :)
Since long time ago, I have not written anything about our little vegetable garden, so here's a post. :)
Evidentemente lo que se puede cultivar en invierno y en verano es rádicalmente diferente. Lo cierto es que en algunos lugares del mundo es completamente imposible cultivar en el exterior en invierno por el frío y la nieve. Nosotros tenemos mucha suerte de vivir en una región templada, donde los inviernos son muy suaves y la temperatura prácticamente nunca baja de los 7 ºC. De todas maneras he tenido que elegir con cuidado los vegetales y las semillas a cultivar.
Obviously, what it can be grown in winter and in summer is radically different. The truth is that in some places it is completely impossible to grow anything in the outside during winter. We are very lucky to live in a temperate region, where winters are very mild and the temperature almost never goes below 7 ºC. Anyway I had to choose carefully the plants and seeds to grow.

También he tenido algún fracaso, para que engañaros. Por ejemplo, el cebollino. Supongo que sería por el frío, pero todo el cebollino se quedó lacio y fue muriendo poco a poco y las semillas que replanté no germinaron. Una pena, esta primavera lo volveré a intentar.
I've also had some failures, I must confess. For example, the chives. I suppose it was the cold, but all chives were dying slowly until no one was left. Still, I re-planted some seeds that did not germinate. A pity, but this spring I'll try it again.
Lo que está siendo un éxito inesperado es la rúcula. Sembré una jardinera en octubre-noviembre y fijaos como está en la foto. Increíble lo lozana que se la ve. Eso sí, crece mucho más despacito que en verano. Aún así está rebrotando muy bien cada vez que la corto, de manera que creo que va a aguantar al menos un par de meses más con nosotros.
What has been a unexpected success is the arugula. I planted some seeds in October-November and look how it looks (over this lines). Amazing! Indeed, it grows much more slower during the winter than in summer. Still, it is sprouting very well, so I think it will hold at least a couple of months more with us.

Lo que estoy cultivando evidentemente ahora son plantas que aguanten bien las bajas temperaturas. Aunque aguantar las bajas temperaturas no quiere decir crecer como si no hiciese frío y el crecimiento de plantas es muy, muy lento. Arriba de estas líneas podeis ver la
mizuma purpura. La planté a mediados de diciembre junto con la mizuma verde, pero crecen tan despacito que aún no nos hemos hecho ninguna ensalada o sopa con ellas. Pero lo estamos deseando.
What I'm now cultivating are plants that can survive at low temperatures. Although surviving the low temperatures does not mean to grow perfectly well. Above these lines you can see the purple Mizuma. I planted them in Mid-December along with the green Mizuma but they grow so slowly that we have not yet eaten any salad or soup with them. But we are looking forward to.

El gran descrubrimiento para mi han sido los berros de jardín (Lepidium sativum). Sobre estas líneas podeis ver un par de macetas, con berros recién germinados y más desarrollados. Germinan perfectamente a estas temperaturas y cuando ya han salido los uso en ensalada. Deliciosos con un buen chorro de vinagra, aceite y sal. ¡Y quedan muy bonitos en la decoración de sopas! La única pena es que no rebrotan, con lo que hay que replantar según vas cortandolos si quieres tener un suministro continuo.
My great discovery have been the watercress (Lepidium sativum). Over these lines you can see a couple of pots with fresh watercress sprouts and some more developed ones. They germinate really well at these temperatures and the sprouts and plantlets can be use in salads. Delicious with a bit of vinager, oil and salt. And they look are very pretty in soups as decoration! The only pity is that they don't sprout again, so you have to replant them every time to have a continuous supply.
